2026 Term 2 Pattern Skills Classes and Free Skate Practice Sessions

Darwin Ice Skating is pleased to offer Patterns Skills Classes for Term 2, 2026. These classes are designed to guide skaters toward International Skating Union (ISU) standards within Ice Skating Australia (ISA).

Patterns training enhances a skater’s overall ability by developing balance, power, flow, edge quality, and extension – essential skating skills that as well as being integral for jumps and spins, also support a part of the skaters’ components mark in a skating routine. This is especially important for competitors.

Patterns are taught across six levels: Preliminary, Elementary, Basic Novice, Advanced Novice, Junior, and Senior.

Skaters may choose to undertake testing to gain ISA-recognised qualifications and pins; however, testing is optional and patterns can be learnt to enhance the above skills.

Skaters, are encouraged to discuss their personal goals with their coach to ensure appropriate guidance. This is particularly important for adult skaters as adult ISA/ISU rules can differ.

Important Information:

• With a few exceptions, this class is usually for skaters who are at Free Skate 1 level and above.
• All skaters who wish to take a Patterns test are recommended to enrol in Patterns each term. 
• If testing, skaters should discuss the progression of the patterns with their coach on a regular basis.
• Testing is subject to ice availability, and usually, an expected number of tests is usually required.
• Fees are required to be paid to the Figure Skating Association of the Northern Territory (FSANT) if a skater wants to take a test.
• So that skaters can be fairly assessed, the coach will sign ‘test ready’ candidates before going out for their test.
• No skater will be permitted to test without a signature from the coach.
• No test paper will be signed by the coach for skaters not enrolled in Patterns at Darwin Ice Skating Centre.
• Skaters not enrolled in Patterns classes are not permitted to do Patterns in private lessons.

Patterns Skills Classes

• Cost: $351 per skater (9-week term)
• No make-up lessons are available for Patterns classes

Preliminary & Elementary Levels

• When: Every Friday
• Dates: 24 April 2026 – 19 June 2026 (9 weeks)
• Time: After school into the evening
  (Exact time will be determined based on interest)

Basic Novice & Advanced Novice Levels

• When: Every Sunday
• Dates: 26 April 2026 – 21 June 2026 (9 weeks)
• Time:
  • 8:17am – 8:45am (for four skaters)
  • 8:24am – 8:45am (for three skaters)

Practice Sessions with Coaching

• When: Fridays (between Patterns Skills sessions)
  (Exact time will be determined based on interest)
• Dates: 24 April 2026 – 19 June 2026 (9 weeks)
• Session Length: 30 minutes per week
• Cost: $225 per 9-week term
• The coach will provide guidance and divide time as evenly as possible among skaters
• Session times depend on participant numbers and will be confirmed in advance
• Maximum of one make-up session for non-medical reasons
• Medical absences require a certificate
• All make-up sessions must be completed within the same term
• Fees are not refundable if make-up sessions are unable to be completed in the same term.
